Helensvale Cricket Club 1982-2011
Subject, Comments from my perspective
Dear Ian,
Firstly my apologies for not be able to make this milestone event in club history. I would have loved to have been along to re unite with all the faces that have been HCC in its 30 years history.
A little background
My family and I left Melbourne in 1981 to take in the coast sunshine and new business career .We landed in Helensvale. I had played for Caulfield for many years in Melbourne’s well known Sub District competition. I had determined that my new life would not involve cricket. I would concentrate on bringing up my young family and focus on my new business direction.
Wrong----I was about to meet the proprietors of the Helensvale Community store Ken Trembath and his wife Gay and the rest as they say is history.
Helensvale was marketed initially as a family community. There was the golf club, a bowls club but little else. The sense of community and belonging was solid and after locals got past the idea that Helensvale was one big “mosquito swamp” the community flourished.
As I recall it Ken had a team of young junior cricketers including his son Greg, nephew Paul, David Gee, Craig Huey, “Huck” , Neil, all in all a great bunch of up and coming young men and cricketers. Finding out that I had some reasonable cricketing “roots” Tremmy in usual way went about recruiting “Paynee”
My response was No !!! I’m done, finished with cricket. This only made Kenny more determined so eventually I warmed to the idea and became involved boots and all.
Ken I recall got in touch with Runaway Bay, an interesting bunch to say the least but they embraced us and we competed our first year as Runaway Bay #2. We were always HCC even though we played on the field as RB #2
As I mentioned I got involved boots and all and I have to say it became an exciting and fulfilling ride. The sense of community in Helensvale grew. We gained great support from Ian Buckberry, head of the Helensvale development Corp, local councilor Colin Klienschmidt and later Ivan Gibbs, member for Albert.
After match BBQ’s at the various house’s became legendary----one night the golden Claw became a part of club folk law---Tremmy will fill the folks in on that one. I believe he still has it and hope he brought it along.
The first season 81/82 we played our games on concrete around the coast and wild and wooly it was, however the boys/team under the old grey haired old fella (I was 36 at the time) acquitted themselves brilliantly. Discipline was a little hard to impart but slowly we became a terrific little outfit----my only regret was agreeing to take a bus load of these rebels to play a friendly in YAMBA. Boy did I get an education on that trip.
We had our own mystery spinner (remember Johnny Gleason) “Toby” O’Brien when asked to roll his arm made a good “living” bowling his “straight” breaks. Then of course there was the legendary wicket keeper Leslie Napper ( was a carpenter by trade and wielded the “willow” in a similar way he handled a “hammer” unorthodox does not get close to describing Leslies cricketing talent.
Tremmy was always there to be used as needed although had to field close because his “Thommo” throwing arm had long deserted him.
By the way you younger guests might not remember before he did his shoulder that Thommo could throw rockets from the “deep” that would ring Marsh’s hands and wouldn’t get 6 feet off the turf.
Tremmy also occupied the crease putting together a memorable 94-------now how on earth did I remember that!!!!
In David Gee and Craig Huey we had probably two of best young up and coming opening batsmen on the coast. David was a tad impetuous where as Craig; well you almost had to take his pulse to see if he was in fact with us. Both were terrific stroke players and fun to be around. Greg Trembath was really handy with the willow and great in the field. Paul his cousin, really was a quick right “armer” who had the ability especially on the “concrete” to bring a ball up on a length around the unsuspecting batsman’s ears.
We were playing Beenleigh at Hession this one day and their number 3 or 4 was giving us a bit of lip and batting quite well, loved the ball up and was driving balls at ease. After driving Paul for a really fluent 4 through the covers I had had enough.
I ran from my position at first slip and said Paul “listen, this guys really getting on my tits put the next ball straight at him, short and whistle it by his ears okay” Well Paul could be a little erratic with his deliveries but on this occasion carried out his skipper’s request to the tee. He hit the guy square on the scone and I do believe “Harry have a chat” spent the night in the Gold Coast hospital.
After that I was a little less aggressive with my wishes to silence troublesome batsman.
Darren Love spear headed the attack and grew into a very accomplished opening bowler. Had to do a lot of talking to Darren but when he kicked into gear he was a very accomplished performer.
But I digress----------
What I realized of course was that this was a talented group of cricketers and handled the right way could make something of themselves. The club pushed on, installed a concrete wicket at Hession and our second season still (as Runaway Bay # 2) people around cricket on the coast started to take notice.
We picked up Teddy Sheehan another “migrant” from Caulfield, a handy bat and off spinner. However the core of the team was made up of the young fella’s Tremmy recruited and who were really coming along.
Helensvale Cricket Club at last
In 1982 I became the delegate to the Gold Coast Cricket association. It was very clear from outset that the majority of affiliated clubs did not want another club admitted especially HCC. I could write pages about the battle that ensued but after two years of being dubbed Runaway Bay # 2 (yet operating as an autonomous club) we as a club did the ultimate deed needed to convince association naysayers WE WON THE 2nd GRADE PREMEIRSHIP in a rain affected final.
Reduced to a one dayer we batted first and were dismissed for around 85 I think we played Runaway Bay 1 strange but true. From memory the opposition started well in the run chase until some grey haired old fella came on and took 6-15 and Helensvale won its first premiership. With it the fuel we needed to prove that Helensvale CC would be a great addition to the local competition.
We were duly admitted and played our first season in A grade as Helensvale Cricket Club in 84/85------
Ken, Tom and others can add their thoughts to the clubs growth through the years, new clubroom turf wicket, establishment of juniors, celebrity sightings etc etc.
I was the first skipper for the first two years and handed the job over to highly touted import Grant Stanley who became the clubs captain coach and a fine job he did too.
The big little club finally became of age and we acquitted ourselves in the inaugural season really well winning many matches against our much fancied opponents. The sense of community at Helensvale came through in so many ways.
Congratulations to Ian for pulling the anniversary together and all current members past and present on the continued success at the club and reaching your 30th year.
The time I spent at the club were memorable in many ways thank you for the opportunity to pass on these few words and may this be the first of many re-unions.
A toast to you all and my old pal’s Tremmy, Tommy (our lovable pain in the Ass treasurer) Toby et al.
Cheers and Happy Anniversary
